You Time: Ready For A Free Vacation?

Anyone who has ever flown on a commercial aircraft has heard the flight attendant’s speech during the safety demonstration.  “Oxygen and the air pressure are always being monitored. In the event of a decompression, an oxygen mask will automatically appear in front of you.  Although the bag does not inflate, oxygen is flowing to the mask. If you are travelling with a child or someone who requires assistance, secure your mask on first, and then assist the other person.”

I’m not sure about you, but my instincts would take over and want to help my family and friends in an emergency.  When you think about it, we wouldn’t be as helpful for the longterm if we don’t take care of ourselves first.  Most would say they put God first, their spouse, family, and themselves last.  I wouldn’t disagree with this and certainly believe this is true.  Although, just like on the airplane if we don’t address our basic physical, emotional, and spiritual needs we just simply won’t be 100% when its time to put other’s first.

Of course in the world we live in today most of us can’t catch a break.  The weekdays fly by, we look forward to the weekend, but instead of slowing down it just seems to get faster and before we know it we are launched into Monday.   This only brings one word to mind:  STRESS!

Now, in comparison to God creating the Heavens and the Earth in His week, our week pales in comparison.  It is no wonder he took a day off and also intended us to have have a day off as well.  This day of rest, referred to as the Sabbath, is God’s way of giving us an all expense paid trip to stress relief.

If someone offered you an all expense paid vacation, especially as a way to relieve stress, you wouldn’t think twice.   Unfortunately, myself included, we are offered this every week and we say “eh, that’s ok I’m fine,” if not totally ignore it all together.

It is when we choose not to accept this mini-vacation that stress takes over.

Maybe you really can’t take an entire day, or maybe you can but only on Tuesdays.  Perhaps its an hour a day it can be whatever works for you.

In Psalm 23, David refers to the Lord as his shepherd that makes him lie down in green pastures.  Why is God making him lay down?  As shepherds tend to their sheep, the sheep aren’t smart enough to lay down and rest.  So it is part of the the shepherd’s job to make them lay down and take a rest.

Are you smart enough to lay down and rest or continue to let stress in by ignoring the shepherd?
